Impacts of screens and social media on young people

Make a difference: express your views to parliamentarians

On June 6, 2024, the Assemblée nationale du Québec created the Select Parliamentary Committee on the Impacts of Screens and Social Media on Young People's Health and Development.

Between now and May 2025, the members of the Select Committee will focus on the issues under consideration, in particular by consulting the general public (including young people) and experts. They will then submit a report to the Assemblée nationale no later than May 30, 2025.

Issues being examined by the Select Committee

  • Young people’s screen time
  • Screen time control measures, in particular at school and on the Web, including access to digital learning tools
  • Access to social media, including video games
  • Cyberbullying, including the sharing of sexually explicit material
  • Minors having access to online pornography
  • Mechanisms used by certain applications to create an addiction
  • Ads targeting children on platforms and applications

From September 12 to 26, 2024, the Committee heard a variety of points of view on the issue of screens and social media among young people during special consultations and public hearings.

Tour of primary and secondary schools

During the weeks of November 4 and 18, 2024, the members of the Committee will be touring some 20 schools to meet with elementary and secondary school students in six regions.

The members of the Committee will talk with young people from Elementary 5 to Secondary 5. The students attend schools representing a diversity of milieux, including public and private schools, and Francophone and Anglophone schools.

Week of November 4

  • Bas-Saint-Laurent (Matane, Mont-Joli, Rivière-du-Loup and Saint-Arsène)
  • Côte-Nord (Baie-Comeau and Pessamit)
  • Gaspésie (Cap-Chat and Sainte-Anne-des-Monts)

Week of November 18

  • Capitale-Nationale (Québec)
  • Grand Montréal (Châteauguay, Montréal and Westmount)
  • Outaouais (Gatineau)

Members of the Select Committee

The Committee is made up of MNAs (parliamentarians) from all the parliamentary groups represented in the Assemblée nationale.

Its steering committee, which is responsible for organizing the Committee's work, also includes MNAs from these four political parties.
